Tobias Fünke

Tobias is a licensed psychiatrist and therapist (an "analrapist," as he insists on saying) who has just quit medicine to pursue acting, a dream for which he has zero evident talent. Married to Lindsay in a relationship both seem to have forgotten the point of, he wanders through scenes utterly convinced of his own competence and appeal.

The joke is that Tobias never notices the joke — David Cross plays every double entendre and disastrous misstep with total sincerity, which is exactly why lines that should be unspeakable on network television slide right past him. His cluelessness is bottomless, delivered so earnestly that the character becomes funnier the more oblivious he is.
