Thurman Smutny

Thurman Smutny runs a modest, family parking lot business in Eden Valley, Minnesota, competing against the much larger Stussy Lots. A widower raising two teenagers, he is plainspoken, decent, and stubbornly proud, resisting Emmit Stussy's pressure to sell even as money grows tight and the offers grow harder to refuse.

He's a small, ordinary man wedged between forces vastly bigger than him, and the show never mocks that smallness. Andrew Bird, better known as a musician than an actor, brings an unpolished sincerity to Thurman that makes his stubborn decency feel real rather than symbolic — a rare moral center in a story about greed.
