Thomas Cromwell

Thomas Cromwell arrives at Henry VIII's court as Cardinal Wolsey's shrewd, low-born secretary, a man who understands the machinery of power better than the noblemen who sneer at his origins. He watches, calculates, and serves his patron with real loyalty, but he is already learning how quickly favor at this court can turn to ruin.

James Frain plays him with a stillness that reads as intelligence rather than menace, letting Cromwell's watchfulness do the work other characters do with speeches. The writing gives him a clear outsider's vantage on the court's cruelty, and Frain uses it to suggest a mind constantly pricing the cost of survival.
