The King

A new monarch inherits the throne with reforming instincts he cannot quite suppress. Thoughtful, sincere and slightly out of step with the constitutional silence expected of him, he wants to use his position to speak for the poor and dispossessed — and finds the Prime Minister has other ideas about what a king is for.

Kitchen plays him without a trace of stuffiness, all quiet moral unease under royal composure, which makes him a genuine foil rather than a figurehead. Against Francis Urquhart's practiced cynicism, his decency reads as dangerous, and the collision between conscience and constitution gives the series its sharpest, most uncomfortable tension.
