Fresh from a regeneration that leaves him briefly amnesiac in a San Francisco morgue, this Doctor emerges gentler and more romantic than his predecessors, all velvet coat and Victorian ruffles. He's curious to the point of recklessness, quick to trust, and delighted by the world in a way that feels almost boyish. He wants, above all, to help.

Paul McGann had barely an hour of screen time to define an entire incarnation, and he made it count: warmth radiates off him, a sense of wonder that never curdles into naivety. Later audio dramas gave the performance room to deepen, but even in that single outing you can see why fans kept asking for more.
