She first appears as Ruth Clayton, a tour guide in Gloucester with a good line in local history and no idea that anything is wrong with her life. When an alien threat surfaces, buried instincts take over — she's suddenly fluent in danger, evasion and command, and the truth of who she is comes rushing back before she's ready for it.

Jo Martin plays the reveal without ever tipping her hand early — Ruth's ordinariness is completely convincing right up until it isn't, and then the shift into command is instant and total, no fumbling. It's a performance built on withheld certainty, and it recast what the show's central mystery could even mean.
