Tegan Jovanka

Tegan Jovanka is an Australian air stewardess who wanders into a police box on her way to her first day of work and finds herself swept off into time and space instead. Brash, quick-tempered and thoroughly unimpressed by the Doctor's vague explanations, she wants nothing more than to get to Heathrow on time.

Janet Fielding plays her with a real sting, refusing to soften Tegan into gratitude for the adventure she never asked for. The writing lets a companion be furious rather than awed, and that friction with the Doctor gives the TARDIS crew an argumentative, human energy the era badly needed.
