Character
Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso in Ted Lasso (2020), played by Jason Sudeikis.
An American college football coach, Ted Lasso arrives in England to manage AFC Richmond, a Premier League club, despite knowing nothing about soccer. He's relentlessly upbeat, quick with a folksy quote, and greeted with contempt by fans and press who assume he's a joke hired to fail.
Sudeikis plays optimism as a discipline rather than a personality quirk — you can see Ted choosing kindness in moments where cynicism would be easier and funnier. The show trusts that a genuinely good man asking sincere questions is more compelling than a fool, and the mustache-and-catchphrases surface never lets you forget there's real intention underneath.
His main goals for the clubs and teams he coaches fall within the ambitions of the somewhat controversial "Ted Lasso Way". He primarily seeks to help the players grow both on and off the pitch, and aims to inspire them to grow as people.
