The writing gives Gardiner the pleasure of a worthy antagonist: he's Cromwell's intellectual equal, never a mere obstacle, and their scenes crackle with real argument rather than simple hostility. Both actors lean into his brittle superiority and barely concealed resentment, making him prickly and watchable rather than simply villainous — a rival whose contempt feels earned by genuine wit.
