Statler

Statler is one of the two crotchety old men who sit in the theater balcony every week, arms crossed, waiting to complain. He and his partner Waldorf watch the Muppet Show's chaos unfold and heckle it mercilessly, never once considering leaving despite claiming to hate every minute.

The joke is that he keeps coming back. Richard Hunt gives him a gravelly, self-satisfied bark that turns every insult into a punchline aimed as much at himself as the show, and the running gag never wears out because his contempt is so clearly a cover for devotion.
