Speed Racer

Speed Racer turns up in Futurama's far-future world as exactly what his name promises: a driven, wide-eyed racer obsessed with getting behind the wheel and winning. He treats every situation like a checkered flag is waiting at the end of it, sincere and a little out of step with the cynicism around him.

The joke is the collision between a relic of retro Saturday-morning earnestness and Futurama's jaded 31st century, and John DiMaggio's gravelly, full-throttle delivery sells the character's straight-faced enthusiasm without winking at the audience. It's a small cameo, but the commitment to the bit is what makes it land.
