Special Agent Dana Scully

Dana Scully is a medical doctor and FBI agent assigned to a shadowy division run by Fox Mulder, tasked—she suspects—with debunking his work from the inside. She meets the paranormal with a scientist's skepticism, sharp and unimpressed, but she is curious enough to keep showing up, and rigorous enough to argue rather than dismiss.

The show hands her the thankless job of being the rational one, and Gillian Anderson makes that a source of tension rather than a joke—her skepticism is never smug, always earned through method and evidence. Watching her hold her ground against the inexplicable, week after week, gives the series its spine.
