The Space Pope is the supreme spiritual authority of a 31st-century faith, presiding with pomp and grandeur over matters of doctrine and morality. He appears rarely but decisively, weighing in on the fate of robots, humans, and everyone in between with the calm certainty of someone used to being obeyed instantly.

Futurama loves a joke that treats absurdity with total institutional seriousness, and the Space Pope is that joke made flesh: a cosmic bureaucrat wrapped in ceremonial robes, voiced with dual gravitas by DiMaggio and LaMarche. He's funniest precisely because the show never explains him — he simply exists, infallible and inexplicable.
