Character
Space Bee #2
Space Bee #2 in Futurama (1999), played by Phil LaMarr.
Space Bee #2 is exactly what the name promises: one of a pair of anthropomorphic bee aliens who buzz into a scene, deliver a line or two, and buzz back out. It exists to be a sight gag with a voice attached, playing its brief moment completely straight.
The joke is entirely in the commitment. Phil LaMarr gives this walk-on insect the same clipped, matter-of-fact delivery he'd give a real character, and that deadpan seriousness applied to something as silly as a numbered space bee is the whole bit — Futurama background gags live or die on actors who refuse to wink at the camera.
At least two Planet Express crews have been sent by Professor Farnsworth to collect space honey from the Space Bees' honeycomb. The Space Bee's sting normally results in instant death if the person stung is not allergic. If the person stung is allergic, the results are much more gruesome as the innards of the stung person will boil out of the eye sockets.
