Sol Star

Sol Star arrives in the Deadwood camp with his partner Seth Bullock, hauling lumber and stock to open a hardware store before either man has a plot of ground to put it on. He is practical, wry, and quietly ambitious, more comfortable smoothing over conflict than starting it, and content to let his prickly partner take the spotlight.

John Hawkes plays the show's rare voice of plain decency without making Sol soft or naive; his patience with Bullock's temper, and his own unspoken longing for respectability and for Trixie, give the camp's grubbiest deals a human counterweight. He's proof Deadwood can do warmth without ever sanding down its filth.
