Sir Robert Peel

Sir Robert Peel arrives at court as the opposite of everything Victoria has known: a Conservative statesman without charm, ease, or patience for palace flattery. Stiff, painfully formal, and visibly uncomfortable in her presence, he wants competent governance over royal favour, and refuses to soften himself just to win the young Queen's liking.

Nigel Lindsay plays Peel's social awkwardness as a kind of integrity rather than a flaw, so his refusal to charm becomes oddly admirable. The writing uses him to needle the show's central romance with political reality, and Lindsay's discomfort is so precise and unglamorous that it reads as truthful rather than merely stuffy.
