Shirley Crain Harris

She keeps her family at arm's length, doles out practical help instead of warmth, and carries herself as the responsible one who cleans up everyone else's messes without ever asking for help with her own.

Elizabeth Reaser plays composure as its own kind of grief, letting Shirley's brisk competence crack open in small, unguarded moments that reveal how much effort the control actually costs. The writing gives her a profession soaked in irony—she tends the dead for a living while refusing to look at what haunts her own house—and Reaser makes that contradiction feel unbearably human.
