Sheriff Walt Longmire

Walt Longmire is the sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, a widower still raw from his wife's death and barely keeping his own life in order even as he keeps the peace. Gruff, dry, unhurried, he polices a sprawling, poor rural county with old-fashioned methods and a stubborn refusal to modernize or explain himself.

Robert Taylor plays him with a stillness that reads as grief held at arm's length rather than stoic cliché — you sense the exhaustion under the drawl. The writing surrounds him with people who push back on his old-school instincts, so his competence never curdles into invincibility; he's a good lawman still learning to be a person again.
