Sheriff Harry S. Truman

Sheriff Harry S. Truman in Twin Peaks (1990), played by Michael Ontkean.

Harry Truman runs Twin Peaks' sheriff's department with quiet, unglamorous decency. When Agent Cooper arrives to investigate Laura Palmer's murder, Truman becomes his local partner and grounding presence — steady, protective of his town and his friends, uneasy with anything he can't explain but willing to follow the evidence anyway.

Ontkean plays Truman as the show's ballast: a straight arrow surrounded by dreamlike strangeness who never becomes a joke for it. The writing trusts him with real feeling — grief, loyalty, a wary friendship with Cooper — and Ontkean underplays all of it, giving Twin Peaks a moral center that never curdles into stiffness.

Harry S. Truman was the sheriff of Twin Peaks, Washington, a position previously held by his father Frederick and his brother Frank. He assisted FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper with the 1989 murder investigation of homecoming queen Laura Palmer, and other connected cases, including the mystery behind the Black Lodge. As a result, Harry and Cooper became close friends.
