Shepherd Book boards Serenity as a paying passenger, a soft-spoken preacher looking for passage and, it seems, a place among people who need guidance whether they want it or not. He's courteous, watchful, and unfailingly calm, offering quiet counsel to Mal and the crew even when nobody asked for it.

Ron Glass plays serenity itself—there's a stillness to him that makes the character's occasional flashes of competence land like small earthquakes. The show keeps hinting that a man of the cloth shouldn't know what he knows, and Glass never tips the mystery; he just lets Book's faith and his other, unspoken history sit comfortably in the same body.
