Sgt. Andy Sipowicz

Andy Sipowicz is a veteran NYPD detective at the 15th Precinct, a man whose instincts are sharp but whose judgment is compromised by drink, temper, and years of bitterness. He's blunt to the point of cruelty, suspicious of anyone soft, and carries himself like someone who has stopped expecting things to go well.

He works because the show refuses to make him likable before he earns it. Franz plays him with a heavy, unglamorous physicality — sweat, gut, a wince before he speaks — so every flash of decency lands as something hard-won rather than given, and you watch a genuinely difficult man slowly become bearable, then necessary.
