Scruffy Clones

Scruffy is the janitor at Planet Express, a mustachioed, flannel-shirted fixture who mops the halls with total indifference to the chaos of interplanetary delivery work around him. He wants only to be left alone with his mop and his beer, and greets every crisis with the same flat, unbothered shrug.

The joke is entirely in the economy: Scruffy barely speaks, barely reacts, and yet somehow always turns up exactly when the plot needs a deadpan non sequitur. David Herman plays him with a low, sleepy monotone that makes his rare lines land like small comic explosions precisely because he seems to care about nothing at all.
