Scruffy

Scruffy is the janitor at Planet Express, a mustachioed nonentity who mops the halls with total indifference to interplanetary catastrophe, mutant uprisings, or anyone remembering his last name. He wants only to be left alone with his mop and his lunch. Nobody, including the writers, seems entirely sure he's necessary — which is exactly the point.

The joke is that Futurama barely bothers with him, and that neglect becomes the bit: a background character so aggressively unimportant that his rare lines land as pure deadpan gold. Billy West's flat delivery treats every absurdity as beneath comment, and the show's willingness to let a whole cast forget he exists is funnier than any elaborate backstory could be.
