Character

Sam Obisanya

Sam Obisanya in Ted Lasso (2020), played by Toheeb Jimoh.

Sam is the young Nigerian winger at AFC Richmond, unfailingly sweet-natured and earnest in a locker room full of bruised egos. He's polite to a fault, quick to apologize, quietly homesick, and eager to belong — the kind of teammate who remembers everyone's birthday and means every word of encouragement he gives.

The show could easily let Sam stay a background nice guy, but it keeps handing him real convictions and letting him act on them, which gives his kindness spine rather than softness. Jimoh plays that decency without a trace of smugness — his warmth reads as effort, not default — so you root for him precisely because he keeps choosing to be good.

He is an optimistic man and usually gets along with other team members and even participates in group activities such as karaoke and dancing in clubs. Although he started out as a defender, he was converted into a right midfielder by Ted Lasso.
