Character
Sam
Sam in Futurama (1999), played by Tress MacNeille.
Sam turns up as one of the countless one-off faces that populate Futurama's twisted future New New York, dropped into a single scene to react, complain, or complicate the plot for a few lines before vanishing back into the crowd. Little about them is explained; they simply exist, fully formed, for the joke at hand.
The show's great trick is treating throwaway characters like Sam with the same vocal commitment as its leads, and Tress MacNeille's range lets even a blink-and-miss-it role land a distinct, funny voice. It's a small proof of how densely populated and generous Futurama's universe really is.
Sam is a small orphan at the Cookieville Minimum-Security Orphanarium. When Bender was the orphans' legal parent, Sam spent the most of his time inside Bender's cabinet.
