Safar Khan

Safar Khan is Nasir's mother, a Pakistani immigrant living a careful, ordinary life in Queens before her son's arrest tears through it. She is proud, private, and devout, unprepared for the sudden glare of police, press, and public suspicion falling on her family. She watches, mostly, before she starts fighting.

Jagannathan plays Safar's unraveling with tremendous control, the panic always visible just beneath a composed, dignified surface. The show lets her be furious rather than merely tearful, and that fury—at cops, at neighbors, at her own helplessness—gives the family's ordeal its most human, least sentimental register.
