Rose (Mum)

Rose is Josh's mother, recently discharged from hospital after a suicide attempt and now living alone with her dog. She's warm, funny, a little scattered, and trying to convince everyone (including herself) that she's fine, even as her son quietly reorganizes his life to keep an eye on her.

Debra Lawrance plays Rose without a trace of victimhood or melodrama — she's droll, self-deprecating, occasionally infuriating, a whole person whose depression is one part of her rather than her defining feature. The show trusts her with real comedy, which makes the vulnerability underneath land so much harder.
