Roger Hamley

Roger Hamley is the squire's younger son, overshadowed by his brilliant elder brother and considered the plainer, plodding one of the family. He is steady, kind, unshowy, more interested in beetles and birds than in dazzling anyone, and he treats Molly Gibson with an easy, unaffected friendship long before anyone thinks to call it romance.

Gaskell's joke on the reader is that the unglamorous one turns out to be the whole point, and Anthony Howell plays that slow reveal beautifully — awkward, sincere, faintly oblivious to his own worth. His scientific curiosity and plain decency make him feel like a real person rather than a romantic device, which is why watching him become essential sneaks up on you.
