Robert Rayburn

Robert Rayburn is the patriarch of a well-liked family that runs an inn in the Florida Keys, a man the whole town seems to respect and defer to. He wants his children close, his legacy secure, and the family's polished surface kept intact, even as an uneasy homecoming stirs old currents beneath it.

Sam Shepard plays him with a rancher's stillness, all weathered authority and unhurried menace, so that warmth and threat seem to come from the same source. The show lets his silences do the work, and Shepard fills them with exactly enough ambiguity that you're never sure whether you're watching love or control.
