River Tam

River Tam comes aboard Serenity as damaged cargo: a teenage genius rescued by her brother Simon from a government facility that broke something inside her. She's brilliant, fragile, and prone to unnerving flashes of insight or violence, speaking in fragments that sound like nonsense until they aren't. Mostly she hides, watches, and waits.

Summer Glau's dance training gives River a physical vocabulary no line of dialogue could — stillness that snaps into terrifying grace. Joss Whedon writes her as a mystery box the show refuses to open too quickly, so every twitch and cryptic utterance feels like a clue. She's unsettling and heartbreaking in the same breath.
