Rick turns up on the edges of the kids' world in Big Mouth as one of those strange grown-ups every suburban childhood seems to produce: a loner with odd habits and no filter, orbiting the main cast with unsolicited opinions and a life that looks lonelier than he lets on. He wants to be noticed, on his own terms.

Nick Kroll plays him with the same unblinking commitment he brings to the show's monsters, finding something both funny and a little sad in a man nobody quite invited. The writing uses him as a jolt of strangeness, and Kroll never winks at the audience—he just lets Rick be exactly, uncomfortably himself.
