Richard Ryan

Richard Ryan is a novelist teaching creative writing at the local college, an outsider dropped into Easttown's tight, grief-worn community. Dry, self-deprecating, and quietly persistent, he starts courting Mare Sheehan with an ease that seems almost foreign to the town, treating her prickliness as something to enjoy rather than endure.

He works as a pressure valve—Guy Pearce plays him with a light, amused warmth that cuts through the show's grief without ever feeling glib. The character gives Mare, and the audience, somewhere to exhale, and Pearce underplays every scene just enough that his charm never curdles into a plot device.
