Richard Harrow

Richard Harrow arrives in Atlantic City as a quiet, careful stranger, half his face hidden behind a tin mask that replaces what a sniper's bullet took from him in the war. He speaks little, watches everything, and carries himself with an eerie, gentle politeness that makes his skill with a rifle all the more startling.

The show could easily have made him a gimmick — the masked killer — but Jack Huston plays him from the unmasked half of his face outward, all wounded courtesy and yearning, so the violence and the tenderness feel like the same man rather than a twist. He's the rare Boardwalk figure whose menace is inseparable from his loneliness.
