Richard Hale

Richard Hale is a quiet country clergyman in Helstone, gentle and bookish, whose private crisis of conscience over Church doctrine forces him to resign his living. He uproots his wife and daughter Margaret to the smoke and clamour of industrial Milton, apologetic and uncertain, leaning on his daughter more than a father usually would.

Pigott-Smith plays him without a trace of weakness dressed up as virtue: his doubt is real, costly, and quietly devastating to the people who depend on him. The performance is all restraint and soft apology, which makes Hale's integrity land harder than any speech could, and makes Margaret's growing responsibility for him feel entirely earned.
