The Referee turns up wherever Futurama needs someone to blow a whistle and enforce rules nobody in the 31st century takes seriously — a background official at blernsball games and other chaotic contests, brisk and businesslike amid the show's usual anarchy, trying to keep order that the plot has no intention of respecting.

Maurice LaMarche brings his booming, theatrical authority to a role that exists mostly to be ignored or steamrolled, and that mismatch is the joke: a voice built for gravitas wasted on a guy nobody listens to. It's a small part, but LaMarche's commitment sells the absurdity around him without ever winking at it.
