Ralph Stone moves through the machinery of Criminal Justice as a man well versed in its workings, someone who understands how prisons, courts and the people caught inside them actually operate. He is watchful and unsentimental, quick to size up a situation, and rarely lets emotion show through the composure he wears like armor.

Con O'Neill plays him with a coiled, watchful intelligence that never tips into showiness, letting small shifts in tone do the work of exposing what the character really thinks. The writing trusts him to carry information and menace in equal measure, and O'Neill's restraint makes every scene he's in feel like it could turn.
