He works because Nick Kroll, who voices half the show's population, gives him just enough gravity to make the joke land: a religious authority figure dropped into a cartoon obsessed with hormones and humiliation. The gap between his composed delivery and the chaos around him is the whole gag, and Kroll never overplays it.
