Private S. Baldrick

Baldrick is Edmund Blackadder's dogsbody, a grimy, dim-witted servant who trails his master through whichever historical mess the show has landed in. He's loyal in a mangy, unthinking way, forever offering terrible plans dressed up as cunning schemes, and utterly unbothered by his own filth, ignorance, or the indignities heaped on him.

Robinson plays stupidity as a kind of serenity, never mugging for it, which makes Baldrick funnier than a broader performance would. The writing uses him as the floor beneath Blackadder's wit — every insult needs a target, every scheme needs a fool to voice it earnestly — and Robinson's flat delivery of nonsense turns him into the show's most reliable laugh.
