Pompey the Great is Rome's most decorated general, a co-ruler of the Republic grown stout and cautious with age. He carries the Senate's favor and the weight of old glory, watching his former ally Caesar's rise from Gaul with the guarded unease of a man who has already won everything once and fears having to do it again.

Cranham plays him without a trace of the swaggering warlord you'd expect from the name — instead there's a tired grandeur, a man who knows exactly how fragile his standing is and negotiates like it. That mismatch between reputation and reality gives every scene with Caesar a quiet, dreadful tension.
