Phyllis

Phyllis arrives behind the bar that used to belong to her brother Phil, now hers to run for the same crowd of reporters and regulars. She's blunt, unsentimental, and clearly not interested in being anyone's replacement — she pours drinks, cuts through nonsense, and lets the room know she's staying.

Tyne Daly plays her with a dry, unhurried authority that never begs for affection, which is exactly why she earns it. The writing wisely doesn't try to recreate Phil; it lets Phyllis be her own gruff, watchful presence, and Daly's timing turns brief, deadpan lines into some of the show's sharpest moments.
