Phoebe Buffay

Phoebe is the odd one in the group, a masseuse and folk singer who grew up on the streets and never learned to hide her strangeness. She's warm and loyal to her friends, but thinks and speaks sideways, offering blunt, otherworldly opinions and a smile that suggests she's noticing something everyone else missed.

Kudrow plays Phoebe's weirdness completely straight, which is the joke and also the reason she never feels like a punchline. Her non-sequiturs land because she never signals they're jokes, and underneath the eccentricity is real generosity and a hard past treated lightly but never erased. She's the show's soul disguised as its clown.
