Philip Jennings

Philip Jennings runs a travel agency in the Washington suburbs, drives a station wagon, coaches his daughter's church group, and worries like any dad about his kids and his marriage. Underneath, he's a Soviet illegal working alongside his wife Elizabeth, and of the two of them, he's the one visibly straining against what the job requires.

Matthew Rhys plays the exhaustion of a man performing sincerity so often he's lost track of which version is real, and the show uses that ambiguity brilliantly. Philip's decency isn't a twist or a weakness written in for contrast — it's a genuine, corrosive problem for a spy, and Rhys makes you feel every cost of it.
