Pfc. Wilbur "Runner" Conley

Runner Conley is one of the young Marines thrown in with Robert Leckie's outfit, a talkative, jittery presence who fills silences with chatter and nervous energy. He wants to survive and be liked, leaning on humor and restless motion to keep his fear at bay as the unit ships out for the Pacific.

Keith Nobbs plays him as the ensemble's exposed nerve — the one whose anxiety nobody else bothers to hide behind stoicism. Amid so much clenched-jaw restraint, his visible fidgeting and compulsive talk read as honest rather than weak, giving the platoon a human pulse before the war strips everyone's nerves the same way.
