Pfc. Sidney Phillips

Sidney Phillips is a young man from Mobile, Alabama, first seen as the steady, good-natured friend of Eugene Sledge, the one who signs up for the Marines while Eugene is held back. Eager, dutiful, and grounded, he heads off to the Pacific with a small-town sense of purpose and no illusions yet about what awaits.

Ashton Holmes plays him as the ordinary decent kid the war will test rather than transform for spectacle, and that restraint matters — Sidney's arc runs through Guadalcanal's exhaustion and fear rather than heroics. He's the audience's anchor to home, a reminder of who these men were before the fighting, played without a false note.
