Penelope Alvarez

Penelope Alvarez is an Army veteran turned nurse, raising two kids in a Los Angeles apartment with her mother Lydia's very loud help. She's divorced, overworked, and funny about it, cracking jokes to keep her PTSD and money worries from swallowing her whole. She wants to hold her family together while barely holding herself together.

Justina Machado plays exhaustion and humor as the same muscle, so Penelope's jokes never feel like a mask slipping off later for drama — they're how she actually survives. The show trusts her to be messy, sexual, anxious, and hilarious in the same scene, and Machado never softens any of it to make her more likable.
