Peggy Hill

Peggy Hill is Hank's wife, Bobby's mother, and a substitute teacher in Arlen who considers herself an expert in nearly everything, including Spanish, which she does not actually speak. She's proud, boisterous, endlessly confident, and certain that her talents are underappreciated by the small Texas town around her.

The joke is always the gap between Peggy's self-image and reality, and Kathy Najimy plays that gap without ever making Peggy stupid or pitiable — just gloriously, obliviously sure of herself. She's a loving mother and wife who genuinely believes she's exceptional, and the show lets her be wrong loudly and often without losing our affection.
