Patrick drifts into Josh's life just as Josh is figuring out he's gay, and he's not exactly rushing to make it easy. Charming, a little elusive, more interested in seeing where things go than defining them, he becomes Josh's first real experiment in wanting someone and not being sure it's mutual.

Cottier plays him with an appealing looseness that makes his non-commitment read as personality rather than plot device, which is exactly why he stings. Please Like Me uses him to show Josh's anxious, over-eager side without ever making Patrick a villain — he's just a guy, underinvested in the way people sometimes are, and that plainness is what makes him ring true.
