Oue, Kanade

Kanade Oue joins the karuta club almost by accident, roped in by Chihaya's enthusiasm despite having no competitive drive of her own. She loves the old poems themselves, their language and history, and dresses the part in kimono when she can. Bookish, unhurried, and kind, she's the club's quiet anchor rather than its star.

The show could easily have made Kanade a punchline, but it lets her love of the Hyakunin Isshu's poetry and diction be genuinely instructive and moving, not just decorative. Ai Kayano plays her with unforced gentleness, so that her steadiness beside Chihaya's fire feels like its own quiet argument for what the game is actually for.
