Mendelsohn plays ambition as a kind of hunger that never quite satisfies itself, all clipped vowels and wounded pride beneath the polished uniform. The writing lets him be plausible before it lets him be monstrous, so his charm to Galen feels genuine even as you sense the calculation underneath. It's a masterclass in institutional insecurity.
