Oregon arrives at university determined to leave her old self behind, trading her real name (Melissa) and her sheltered, extremely respectable upbringing for a persona of worldliness and mystery. She drops hints about a troubled past she hasn't actually had, chases approval from people she considers more sophisticated, and squirms whenever her parents threaten to reveal the truth.

The joke is precise: she's inventing edginess to impress people who are, if anything, less together than she is. Charlotte Ritchie plays the panic under the composure beautifully, letting Oregon's poise crack exactly when her real family or her real name threatens to surface, which is often, and always funnier for how hard she's trying.
